⚙️ Turning Down Voith Germany for Family: A Life-Defining Decision in 1994 Back in 1994, a massive opportunity knocked on my door from VOITH GERMANY, the world-renowned industrial engineering giant. At the time, I was working as an Electrician under the name of Mohammad Salim at the National Paper & Board Mills in SITE Area, Karachi. Our facility was setting up a highly sophisticated sweet-water plant, engineered completely by VOITH. They needed precise, on-site engineering layouts to execute the installation. For nearly three months, I poured my heart and soul into the project. I manually mapped out every single technical detail—calculating precise lengths, widths, heights, and drawing intricate working diagrams of the entire setup. When the German owner of VOITH arrived in Karachi to inspect the plant and reviewed my documentation, he was stunned by the accuracy. Through his translator, he looked at me and made a life-changing offer: "Come with me to Germany. Work directly at our main VOITH paper mill." It was a golden ticket to Western Europe and a thriving international career with one of the biggest names in the industry. But there was a non-negotiable catch. I was newly married and had a newborn baby girl. I looked the VOITH owner in the eye and said, "I will come, but only if my wife and daughter get their visas to travel with me from day one." The owner replied, "That's not how corporate policy works. Come alone for 6 months. Let us evaluate each other, and once you adapt, we will sponsor your family." I stood my ground: "My family’s visa first, then me. I cannot leave them behind." Because we couldn't bridge that gap, I walked away from VOITH GERMANY. At that moment, many thought I had wasted the biggest opportunity of my life. 💡 What this 1994 memory taught me about life and career: True Skill Attracts Global Giants: When you master your craft—like those 3 months of rigorous technical mapping—global leaders like VOITH will recognize your worth, regardless of where you are starting from. Define Your Core Values Early: Your career will inevitably force you to choose between rapid professional advancement and personal sacrifice. Knowing your non-negotiables protects you from future regret. No Regrets in Putting Family First: Looking back today, some might see it as a missed chance, but I see it as a triumph. Career milestones are great, but being there to watch your children grow up is irreplaceable. I chose my family over a corporate dream in Germany, and looking back, I would make the exact same choice all over again. To my network on LinkedIn, especially the global engineering community: Have you ever had to choose between a massive career leap and the ones you love?
