This advanced data center design showcases a highly resilient and scalable architecture using Cisco Nexus, MDS, and UCS platforms. It is built around core technologies like FabricPath, vPC, OTV, and FCoE, enabling high availability, efficient traffic forwarding, and unified fabric for both LAN and SAN environments. At the core of the design are Nexus 7000 switches, acting as the aggregation layer and providing OTV (Overlay Transport Virtualization) for seamless Layer 2 extension between virtual data centers. These core switches also play a key role in handling FCoE traffic and supporting NPV/VE roles, making them essential for both Ethernet and Fibre Channel services. Downstream, Nexus 5548UP switches are configured in a vPC domain, ensuring active-active uplinks with loop-free topology. These switches connect to both Cisco MDS Fibre Channel switches for SAN connectivity and Cisco UCS C-Series servers through FEX modules, leveraging FCoE to reduce cabling and converge traffic. FabricPath is used between the 5548s and Nexus 7000s to provide Layer 2 multipathing with no Spanning Tree Protocol, allowing all links to be utilized and improving fault tolerance and throughput. vPC ensures server-facing ports remain active and load-balanced. The design also integrates FCIP connectivity between MDS-A and MDS-B, allowing storage replication or DR over IP, enhancing business continuity.
