Some great press for MOUA at the start of June, with an article in the Townsville Bulletin interviewing MOUA Directors Kerrie Everett-Horrocks and Adam Smith PhD MBA! This fabulous media coverage puts a spotlight on our work in reef restoration and ocean education, and emphasises the importance of protecting our oceans and reefs - just in time for World Ocean Day! The Museum of Underwater Art was created by internationally-acclaimed artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who (as the article stated) returned to the site during World Ocean Week to help us document the coral growth and draw attention to the “benefits of artificial reefs worldwide”. The article described our “brilliant problem” of having corals grow so well on some of our sculptures that they are weighing them down - requiring coral transplantation onto other parts of the museum! Not only does our museum support coral growth as an artificial reef, it also acts as a world class tourism attraction - the first underwater museum in the Southern Hemisphere! MOUA’s World Ocean Day events, like Kerrie and Adam said, are a way to bring a community of ocean-lovers together, share knowledge, get people into the water, and get involved by helping us to “take action to conserve our oceans”. Adam Smith was also interviewed for another article in the Townsville Bulletin later that week, encouraging the community to get involved in citizen science and our ReefBlitz project - explaining that you don't have to be a scientist to contribute to marine science! Thank you so much to the Townsville Bulletin for shining a light on our work, and helping to promote our World Ocean Day events!
