Deeply understanding technical project challenges and their solutions is a core part of engineering. Shaping policies that transform infrastructure systems is another. Motivated by the opportunity to develop policy, Mott MacDonald Fellow Simon Harrison has built an accomplished career as a globally recognised expert, advising governments and private sector clients on engineering aspects of energy transition and sustainability. Reflecting on his career journey so far, Simon says: “Engineers can positively influence the lives of people and the wellbeing of the planet. We develop, design and implement the solutions that make the difference. From my technical project work bringing electricity into communities for the first time, to shaping public policy on decarbonisation of systems, I am very proud of the work that I do, and the incredible people that I get to work with." This fascination with the bigger picture has seen Simon collaborate with some of the best engineers from across the industry. This has helped to shape UK energy policy for the future, most recently through the report “Rapid Decarbonisation of the GB Energy System” for the Royal Academy of Engineering, which explored the functionality needed for a transformed and decarbonised UK electricity system.
