You might have seen the news this morning about Ellie Irwin, a patient of Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, who showed incredible resilience whilst searching for an explanation to what was causing her recurring eye condition. After years of not knowing, a pioneering testing method known as metagenomics finally uncovered the reason – leptospirosis, a rare strain of bacterial infection found in South America. Moorfields Eye Charity is so proud to have funded the metagenomics project, led by Dr Colin Chu, in collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. By funding innovative medical advancements like this test, patients and doctors can feel more secure that a possible solution can be found. We want to make this treatment even more accessible and available. With continued support, we can provide life-changing care and research to help patients like Ellie.
