We are funding an exciting new PhD project investigating immune system responses to retinal gene therapy. Gene therapy shows great promise for treating inherited retinal diseases, but inflammation can sometimes occur as a side effect and even cause vision loss. 👁️ Under the supervision of Dr. Colin Chu and Professor Andrew Dick, PhD student, Rose Avient, will use advanced imaging technology to examine the interactions between immune and retinal cells after gene therapy. By studying the effects of dose, delivery method, and treatment modifications, the project aims to uncover ways to minimise unwanted immune responses. This research has important translational potential to inform inflammation management in retinal gene therapy patients. The results could guide future gene therapy development and administration to avoid vision-threatening complications by furthering our understanding of the underlying immune mechanisms.
