In occasion of the anniversary of Madam Curie’s birthday, we would like to celebrate her stunning scientific career by remembering her own words: “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” Born in Warsaw on 7 November 1867, she moved to Paris to study Physics and Mathematics at the Sorbonne. There, her prolific research activities led to the discovery of polonium and radium and investigated the phenomenon of spontaneous radioactivity. Her work was crucial in the development of x-rays in medical practice. During World War One Curie helped to equip ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she herself drove to the front lines. Marie Curie was the first woman to win a #Nobel Prize, the first person to win the #NobelPrize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two scientific fields, #Physics and #Chemistry. She was, in 1906, the first woman to become a professor at the Sorbonne University. No wonder that the #EU program supporting #excellence in #research and #innovation, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, is called after her! #MarieCurie #MSCA #horizon2020 #horizonEurope #MONPLAS #microplastics #nanoplastics
