The tech giants are quietly splitting into two distinct camps over smart glasses. Either building AI assistants for your face, or a true augmented reality experience. Right now, the market is aggressively choosing AI. Apple is reportedly halting its Vision Pro overhaul to focus on lighter, AI-first glasses powered by Siri. Snap is still spending billions trying to make see-through holograms a reality. Meanwhile, Meta and Google are deliberately playing both sides. Meta’s AI-enabled Ray-Bans are proving that consumers will actually buy and wear smart glasses today. Consumers want fashionable utility. The market right now is choosing tech that offers convenience like real-time translation and navigation in a form factor that can be part of your everyday outfit. While AR remains the long-term goal, AI is winning today by delivering immediate, frictionless value without the hurdles of cost or privacy. All this to say, Apple might not be behind the trend at all. They likely just realize that to win the spatial computing war, you first have to build a product ordinary people actually want to wear.
