“Even movements dedicated to fighting racism and injustice can develop their own blind spots.” In 2022, Indonesian art collective Taring Pardi was embroiled in controversy surrounding a piece displayed in Kassel, Germany. At the time, defenders of the collective called it a failure of translation. Four years later, after a parallel controversy at this year’s Venice Biennale, the group is harder to defend. Art historian and rabbi David Sperber talks about the needs of a progressive arts world to recognize its own prejudices.
