When daring to address some of the difficult issues of our time, setbacks are inevitable. Yesterday at The Poetics of Leadership, psychologist Ronke Oluwadare and cultural entrepreneur Montserrat Fernandez Blanco created a space for vulnerability to explore participants' experiences of failure. By articulating and listening to each others experiences, and tracing the various linguistic and cultural roots of failure, new lines of inquiry emerged: What if some experiences are far too rich and complex to be reduced to "failure"? What if our current vocabulary is simply inadequate? The session worked with a simple but demanding premise: that failure, looked at carefully, reveals things that "success" tends to obscure. That setbacks carry information that will guide the next attempt.
