PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF BATTERY SAFETY IN AVIATION --------------------------------------------------------------------- Safety is a must in aviation – there is no room for compromise. That’s why the MODABAT project is subjecting its battery subsystems to rigorous testing during the design phase. By precisely characterizing cell behavior under failure conditions, we ensure maximum safety and optimal component dimensioning. UPV (Universitat Politècnica de València) is leading this task by conducting battery abuse testing using ARC-HWS (Accelerating Rate Calorimetry - Heat Wait Search) technology together with 2-cell propagation tests. By analyzing cells under controlled thermal runaway scenarios, the team is gathering critical experimental data regarding: 🔹 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: Quantifying heat generation rates to select appropriate materials and size the cooling system. 🔹 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Identifying the volume and specific gases released to properly design venting pathways. 🔹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Assessing the type and size of ejected particles during this event. The goal: Integrating this experimental data into advanced simulation models to validate design concepts and accelerate the development of a certified battery system for the aviation sector.
