On #CivilServicesDay 2026 MNRE organised a Breakaway Session on “Accelerating India’s Net-Zero Path through PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The session was chaired by Shri Santosh Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, who highlighted India’s record addition of 51 GW renewable energy capacity in FY 2025-26, including 16.3 GW through Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) under flagship schemes such as PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM. A context-setting presentation was delivered by Shri J.V.N. Subramanyam, Joint Secretary, MNRE, highlighting the strong progress under PM Surya Ghar with 56 lakh applications, 35 lakh households benefitted, and ₹19,500 crore subsidy transferred directly to citizens’ bank accounts. The session featured valuable insights from esteemed panelists: Shri Narendra Bhooshan, Secretary, DoLR shared his experience from the State of Uttar Pradesh where rapid scale-up of RTS installations happened through strong monitoring and vendor ecosystem development; Shri Lokesh Chandra, ACS, Maharashtra and MD MSEDCL highlighted Maharashtra’s success in solarising agricultural demand and reducing subsidy burden on the ex-chequer and reduction in electricity tariff; Shri Puneet Kumar, ACS, Energy Keralam informed about Kerala’s pace of installations and future focus on BESS for rooftop solar and DRE for EV charging infrastructure; Dr. K.K. Dwivedi, ACS to CM and Power presented Assam’s rapid progress in RTS installations and future plans for pumped storage and battery energy systems; and Shri Abhishek Ranjan highlighted the advantages of installing BESS including alongwith RTS apart from urban clean energy innovation through net metering reforms. The deliberations reaffirmed that PM Surya Ghar is a transformative citizen-centric initiative advancing India’s energy transition journey by enabling households to directly participate in the clean energy transition. #MNRE #PMSG #SolarEnergy
