SAVITRIBAI PHULE’s 187th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: Savitribai Phule was an Indian social reformer, educationalist, and poet from Maharashtra. She is regarded as the ‘first female teacher’ of India. Along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she played an important role in improving women's rights in India and opened an India’s first school for girls in Pune during 1848 and a pioneer in advocating women’s right to education. It is said that Savitribai used to carry an extra sari while walking towards her school as people used to throw mud and dung at her apart from verbal abuses for teaching girls.
