Travel hubs were once designed primarily for movement. Get people from A to B as efficiently as possible. Today, expectations are different. Passengers still value efficiency, but they also expect atmosphere, identity, and memorable experiences. Whether in an airport, station, or travel retail environment, people increasingly want spaces that feel distinctive rather than purely functional. The most successful travel environments understand this shift. They create moments that encourage people to pause, explore, and engage with their surroundings. In doing so, transit spaces become destinations in their own right. Lighting plays an important role in that transformation. It helps shape identity, highlight architecture, create atmosphere, and turn everyday journeys into memorable experiences. A great example is our project in the Wandelhalle Hamburg, located within Hamburg Central Station and one of the city's busiest shopping destinations. Together with our partner Pep Up, we created an immersive lighting experience within this historic setting. At the centre stands an 11-metre-high Giant Tree made of i-String Lite, featuring 18,000 light points. Elevated on a podium, it serves as a striking focal point for visitors moving through the space. Every 20 minutes, a sound-to-light show set to "Let It Snow" creates a shared moment of wonder. Throughout the day, a curated soundtrack and dynamic lighting animations continue to bring energy and atmosphere to the environment. Spanning two floors, Dual String Lite and integrated RGB spotlights enhance the architectural character of the building while connecting visitors to the experience around them. The result is more than seasonal decoration. It is an example of how lighting, architecture, and storytelling can transform a transit space into a destination that people remember. #mkillumination #BeingBetterTogether #TravelRetail #PassengerExperience #LightingDesign #DestinationDesign #Placemaking #VisitorExperience
