As our electric grid undergoes its most transformative period in decades, the U.S Department of Energy’s (DOE) i2X Interconnection Roadmap provides critical goals to help utilities, developers, and regulators navigate this transition. With distributed energy resources (DERs) becoming essential assets for grid flexibility and resilience, these four strategic goals address some fundamental challenges: • improving data transparency and security (Goal #1), • streamlining interconnection processes to reduce years-long backlogs (Goal #2), • ensuring fair and efficient cost allocation (Goal #3), and • maintaining grid reliability through emerging technologies (Goal #4). The roadmap recognizes that DERs aren't just one more thing changing on the grid but are valuable resources that can enhance system performance and reduce ratepayer cost when implemented effectively. Flexible Interconnection offers a powerful solution that addresses multiple i2X goals simultaneously, transforming DERs from interconnection challenges into grid assets. By enabling conditional connections with real-time export management, these approaches speed up queue wait times while avoiding costly infrastructure upgrades, directly tackling the process delays and economic inefficiencies identified by the DOE in Goals #2 and #3. This flexible approach doesn't compromise reliability. It enhances grid security, as outlined in Goal #4, through automated control that enable DERs to dynamically respond to system needs. While flexible interconnection introduces a new risk for developers: an uncertainty on grid availability, our team has developed a robust set of assessment tools over the last 15 years to provide clarity into expected production. These curtailment assessment tools provide the transparent, actionable hosting capacity data that Goal #1 asks for, allowing developers to optimize projects based on actual grid conditions rather than worst-case scenarios.
