2/2 When we began School Pixel we were hard-coding levels, but this approach soon felt limiting for flexible world-building, so we created our own game editor environment. For Haus der Kunst Munich's HausCode initiative we decided not only to create a custom level, but also to push the development of our game editor by building a simplified, child-friendly version anyone can use. The "For Children" School Pixel editor runs entirely in the browser – no backend framework, just pure vanilla JavaScript on HTML5 Canvas. The rendering is sprite-based: elements and glyphs are drawn from a pre-baked pixel-art sheet onto the 2D canvas. The interface design draws on Nell's childhood memories of pixel painting on a Macintosh Plus. Its friendly environment invites world-making: erase and carve paths, paint and fill landscape Elements (earth, sand, lava, ice, etc.) and type Energy Letters and words for Drillbot to collect. When ready, test-play and submit into the evolving online Show of levels for others to try out. Have a Play and Make at https://lnkd.in/dK4iyygc. HausCode has been an amazing push for the game's development, and we're continuing to develop a range of School Pixel beta levels as well as our full pro editor. * Produced in collaboration with the Haus der Kunst Munich for the HausCode Studio.
