Today is Windrush Day. The mental health impact of the Windrush scandal has been profound and far-reaching. Let us explain ⤵️ The mental health impact of the Windrush scandal has affected multiple generations. Unfair treatment led to increased mental health issues for both the Windrush generation and their descendants. Unfair treatment led to increased mental health issues. The Windrush scandal led to unfair job loses and housing issues. Many experienced trauma from being detained or deported. Or witnessing this happen to friends and family. The scandal made many feel even more alone as they were cut off from a range of social services. Many were made to feel unwelcome in a country they had called home for decades. Descendants of the Windrush generation mental health are still impacted. Dealing with the family distress, legal battles took a toll on younger members of the family. Growing up having their sense of identity and belonging being questioned. Is a lot for anyone to take. The legacy of the Windrush scandal still lives on. Affected families still face inequalities today, including in relation to their mental health. Work is being done to better support the Windrush generation and their families. In 2022 Patrick Vernon OBE and UCL professor Rochelle Burgess announced a new project - The Ties That Bind. This project aims to explore the intergenerational mental health impact of the Windrush scandal on Caribbean and Black African families. The study hopes to improve mental health services provided to these families. We are pleased to see work being done to tackle the mental health issues caused by the Windrush scandal and would love to see the UK government taking steps to support all those involved.
