Over one million children in England were referred to mental health services last year, according to a new report by the Children’s Commissioner published today. That’s double the number in 2018-19. And over 60,000 children were waiting over two years for help. We are deeply concerned. It is clear the system is struggling to respond to the challenges young people are facing. Young people need access to support as soon as they need it. The longer they go without, the more unwell they can become, increasing the likelihood of needing to access support from crisis and A&E services. The UK Government’s mental health strategy needs to be a turning point. This is a pivotal opportunity to transform the mental health of the next generation. It requires a shift towards mental health support that is responsive, tailored and person-centred, ensuring all young people can access high-quality conversations about their mental health needs, when it matters most.
