Before it became waterfront condos, shops, and public space, this site was a contaminated former shipyard on the North Vancouver shoreline. Decades of industrial activity had left behind hydrocarbons, metals, buried debris, creosote piles, and contaminated groundwater in the middle of the busy Lonsdale Quay area. Milestone was brought in to remediate the site and prepare it for redevelopment. The work included excavating and disposing of approximately 50,000 tonnes of contaminated soil, removing historical infrastructure, stabilizing impacted materials, and treating groundwater before safe discharge into the marine environment. One of the biggest challenges was carrying out large-scale remediation in an active public waterfront area while working below sea level just metres from the shoreline.
