The geopolitical "arms race" for AI just took a dark turn—and it’s created a massive, once-in-a-generation opening for Canada. Last week, the U.S. government designated Anthropic as a "supply chain risk." Not because of a security breach, but because the company refused to lift ethical guardrails on domestic surveillance and autonomous weaponry. Washington is sending a clear message: In the U.S., "AI Safety" is now being redefined as "State Compliance." This creates a "conscience crisis" for the world's top talent. If you won't build tools for autonomous warfare, are you a liability to your country? This is where Canada’s "polite" academic legacy meets hard-nosed strategy. By positioning ourselves as the "Geneva of Compute," we can offer:  A sanctuary for ethical AI research.  Sovereign infrastructure protected by Canadian law, not arbitrary foreign orders.  A "Northern Vault" for the world’s most sensitive IP. The U.S. will always be the engine of innovation. But the world desperately needs a trusted arbiter. I’ve laid out the full "Middle Power Playbook" for Canada in my latest article.
