Horseplay and hazing are major issues in many companies...I never tolerated it...but stopping it is a neverending challenge. The oilfield has always had a horseplay problem...sometimes with deadly consequences. Luckily, firearms usually weren't involved. There were always plenty of other dangerous props at hand. The most exasperating part is that incidents happen, rules are made, everyone agrees that the rules are good and prudent...and yet those rules are repeatedly ignored. One of the oldest, most important, most stressed rules in firearm safety is: don't point your weapon at something you don't want to shoot. The second rule is: it's the unloaded weapon that kills I've seen empty weapons discharged into ceilings...'dry fired'...by people who should know better...the same people who preach gun safety. They seem to forget that the rules apply to them. I've had aquaintances injured from accidental trigger pulls...either by finger or catching on something. And these were 'careful' gun owners. Unintended Discharges are inevitable...there are numerous ways in which a weapon can be discharged unintentionally. That's why you never point it at something you don't want to shoot.
