𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 Senate Minority Leader Kurt Fevella (District 19 - ‘Ewa Beach, Ocean Pointe, ‘Ewa by Gentry, Iroquois Point, portion of ‘Ewa Villages) recently submitted testimony to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) opposing the placement of offshore wind turbines in Hawaiʻi’s waters, citing potential harm to marine life and difficulties of maintaining the turbines as reasons to reconsider the proposal. NREL is currently working to place wind turbines in waters off the nation’s shores in an effort to provide clean energy to coastal cities and the larger national grid. The agency is also considering the potential of wind turbines in Hawaiʻi to help the state reach its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045.
