135 years ago next week, preparations began for U-M's first program to train nurses. It opened in late 1891 as part of the opening of our new hospitals on Catherine Street, and was officially part of the Medical School. By 1912, just after this photo of student nurses was taken in front of one of those hospitals, the Training School for Nurses was awarding formal diplomas after a three-year course of study, and had become part of the hospital administration. Learn more U-M nursing history at a special event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, May 4 featuring Linda Strodtman, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor emerita who directs the Nursing History Society. It's at the Museum on Main Street near Kerrytown, and is part of our ongoing exhibit on 175 years of U-M medical history. Even if you can't make it to the special nursing history event, stop by the museum any Saturday or Sunday afternoon through August, or book a private weekday tour, to see all the artifacts and photos in the exhibit.
