I have had the distinct pleasure of coaching my 10 year old daughter's travel soccer team this year and last night we played for first place...Full disclaimer the only sport I didn't really play growing up was soccer, but I figured by binging Ted Lasso I could be best prepared to lead the HP Bulls this year! What started as a fun way to stay involved with my daughter and her incredible teammates has become a powerful lesson in culture, talent management, and leadership—both on and off the field. ⚽👥 Here’s what this experience has reinforced for me: Culture is Everything: Culture is the foundation in soccer or business. Creating an environment of trust, fun, and collaboration enables the team to work better together and bring out the best in each other. In business, fostering a strong, positive culture has the same effect—when your team feels supported, they’ll perform at their peak. Talent Management Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All: Each player on the field has different strengths and motivations. Some are natural leaders, others are more analytical. My role as a coach is to recognize each player’s unique potential and place them in positions where they can thrive. In business, effective talent management means understanding your team’s strengths and putting them in the right roles to unlock their full potential. Leadership is About Empowerment: On the field, leading a group of kids isn’t about controlling every move—it’s about empowering them to make decisions, take responsibility, and build confidence. In business, the same principle applies: great leadership means giving your team the freedom and trust to take ownership of their work and grow. Going into the 4th quarter last night of a 0-0 game, I looked to our leaders (4th graders) and told them to own the huddle and talk to each other. I did not say a word...They rallied each other, and locked hands...It's their team, not mine...and wouldn't you know 4 goals in the 4th quarter later they were victorious! Surround Yourself with People Smarter Than You: One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a coach is to surround myself with fellow coaches who know more than I do (Thanks Buca and Doug!). Their insights and knowledge have made me a better leader, and it’s a great reminder that in business, you don’t need to have all the answers. Surrounding yourself with experts elevates everyone. Whether coaching a soccer team or leading a business, the fundamentals of building a successful team are the same. Culture, talent management, and leadership are all about empowering people, aligning them with the right roles, and fostering a shared sense of purpose. P.S. Below is the postgame pic where our team got to celebrate a victory and teammates birthday together! #Leadership #TalentManagement #CompanyCulture #Soccer #TeamBuilding #Coaching #LifelongLearning
