The difference between a manager and a leader? One controls outcomes. The other protects people. And protection shows up in small moments. Sometimes the smallest thing you did meant everything to someone else. And you’ll never even know. It’s quiet decisions no one applauds that someone never forgets. Your team won’t remember your slides. They’ll remember how you showed up when it mattered most. Leadership isn’t proven in big speeches. It’s revealed in small moments like these 👇 1. Not forwarding the angry email Calling first. De-escalating before damage spreads. Restraint is leadership. 2. Blocking toxic behavior immediately Not laughing at the sarcastic joke. Not tolerating the subtle dig. Silence signals permission. 3. Saying “We” in success and “I” in failure Taking ownership upward. Sharing credit downward. That single switch builds trust. 4. Texting after hours - not to demand, but to support “Saw the client mail. I’ll handle it.” Stress diffused before it explodes. 5. Making sure they’re not alone after a tough day “Want to debrief?” Care doesn’t clock out at 6pm. 6. Asking what they want - not just what you need Aligning ambition with opportunity. Engagement begins with agency. 7. Encouraging them to think bigger than their role “What would you do if you ran this?” Ownership expands when invited. Kindness isn’t softness. It's courage. It’s choosing trust over control. Protection over ego. Belief over dominance. Years from now, someone will say: “They stood up for me.” “They believed in me.” “They changed how I saw myself.” That’s real power. Titles fade. Impact doesn’t. The world doesn’t need louder leaders. It needs braver ones. Be that leader. ♻ Repost to raise the bar for what leadership should look like. ➕ Follow Mike Leber for leadership that actually builds people.
