In sports science and sports psychiatry, some ideas don’t disappear—they get absorbed and even overlooked. The concept of “staleness” once showed promise in understanding athlete burnout, but over time it was folded into broader overtraining syndrome (OTS) discussions. Without clear definitions, and with research often separating physical and mental factors, confusion has persisted. The result? Limited progress in screening🏥, diagnosis, and prevention. This isn’t just a semantic issue. It highlights how fragmented thinking can hold back athlete care. Sports psychiatry🧠 sits at a crucial intersection—well placed to reconnect these threads. By revisiting foundational concepts like staleness and integrating mental and physical perspectives, there’s an opportunity to strengthen how we understand and support athlete wellbeing. Re-examining past frameworks may be just as important as developing new ones.
