The Student Regent is a current UC grad student who gets a full voting seat on the UC Board of Regents, representing all 280,000-plus students across the system. The current one is Sonya Brooks, a UCLA PhD student in Education Policy. She’s the first Black woman to hold the position. She serves a one-year non-voting designate term, then a one-year voting term. It’s a huge deal — she sits in on all the big decisions about tuition, budgets, admissions, and campus policies.
