A powerful earthquake struck Venezuela's northern coast on Wednesday, with the full scale of the damage still becoming clear. The 7.2 magnitude quake caused significant destruction in the coastal state of La Guaira, around 30 kilometres from Caracas, with buildings collapsed and emergency services stretched across affected areas. Communication to some of the worst hit zones was disrupted in the immediate aftermath, slowing the flow of information. Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and addressed the nation, calling for unity and accepting offers of international assistance, including from the United States. That openness to outside help marks a notable shift from the posture of the previous government. The country was already navigating an extraordinarily difficult political transition following the removal of Nicolás Maduro in January. The earthquake compounds that uncertainty at a moment when institutions are fragile, infrastructure is severely degraded after years of underinvestment, and the capacity of civil protection services to respond at scale is limited.
