Mariska Oosterhof-te Pas recently obtained her PhD from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven based on research into better prediction of postoperative confusion in elderly patients. In her dissertation, she examined how healthcare providers can better assess, even before surgery, which patients are particularly vulnerable to delirium or other cognitive problems following a procedure. For her research, co-supervised by Marc Buise, MD PhD, Oosterhof-te Pas examined various modern tools to detect this vulnerability earlier. These include a digital questionnaire in the form of a chatbot, a playful cognitive test, brain monitoring, and measurements of the stress hormone cortisol in blood, saliva, and sweat, among other sources.
