According to the MetLife 2026 Paycheck or Pot of Gold Study, nearly all retirees who have nothing left of their lump sum and say that caused them a financial hardship (98%) believe that an additional layer of retirement income could have prevented it. In 2026, lump sum retirees who were offered the ability to convert to an annuity* are more than three times as likely as in previous years to express regret over not choosing guaranteed annuity payments from their defined contribution plans.
