සුභ අලුත් අවුරුද්දක් වේවා! – Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa! 🇱🇰✨ Today in Sri Lanka, we celebrate Aluth Avurudu (the Sinhala & Tamil New Year). Originally a festival of the soil, this was a time for farmers to give thanks for a bountiful rice harvest. While modern Sri Lanka has transformed into a vibrant, tech-forward nation, the spirit of the harvest remains. We celebrate to keep our rich heritage alive, using these days to pause, honour our elders, and reset for the year ahead with ancient rituals performed at specific "auspicious times." The photo shows a traditional Avurudu Table, the heart of every home today: ⭐ Kiribath (Milk Rice): The centrepiece. Rice is cooked with rich coconut milk and cut into diamonds to symbolise prosperity. ⭐ The Golden Sweets: Crispy, wheel-shaped Kokis and honey-soaked Kavum (oil cakes), both handmade from rice flour and treacle. ⭐ The "Kick": Lunu Miris, a fiery red onion and chilli paste that perfectly balances the creamy milk rice. ⭐ The Light: The oil lamp in the centre is lit to signal the official start of the festivities, bringing light and hope into the home. ...all accompanied by plenty of tea, laughter, and extra sweets! Avurudu is the ultimate display of the island's famous hospitality. If you’re visiting us in April, don’t be surprised if you’re invited to join a feast—it’s our way of spreading joy and ensuring a "sweet" start to the year for everyone.
