How do you make a car part strong enough for everyday use, but easier to take apart when it matters? If we want to think about vehicle components more sustainably, we need to look beyond the material alone - and ask how those components are joined, separated and brought back into use. At Mercedes-Benz, that question is shaping new ideas. In our latest episode of Tech Explained, Rob Halloway takes a closer look at two Mercedes-Benz technologies that approach this challenge from both sides: material and connection. It’s a highly technical topic, but the principle is surprisingly simple. While the PET monosandwich door pocket is designed around a simpler material concept based on recycled PET, the demountable thermoplastic rivet connection focuses on the next step: making it easier to separate components later for reuse, repair and recycling. The novel monomaterial carrier featuring a new removable rivet is only one project within Tomorrow XX, a technology programme exploring the limits of technical feasibility. What is shown here reflects a current development stage and is intended to illustrate potential approaches pursued by Mercedes-Benz. The technology is not yet available and not used in series vehicles. Watch the full episode below! #MercedesBenz #WelcomeHome #140YearsOfInnovation
