After passing my final year medical school exams and becoming a doctor, I have just completed a 6 week elective in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with Dr Nicole Stamatopoulos in Sydney, Australia. During my time with Nicole I had the opportunity to spend time in clinic, theatre and on the maternity ward for the deliveries. In theatre I observed laparoscopic excision of endometriosis, polypectomies, hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsies, uterus ablation, tubal dye tests, Mirena insertion under anaesthetic, fibroid morcellation, and vaginal hysterectomy with anterior and posterior repair. I also saw numerous vaginal and caesarian section deliveries, which was the most incredible experience, especially as I really bonded with the families before the births, so was honoured to be a part of their special moment. In clinic I observed antenatal check-ups and gynaecology consultations, as well as minor procedures and imaging which could be performed in the clinic rooms. This included Mirena insertion and removal, colposcopy, polypectomy, LLETZ, transvaginal ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound. Nicole is the most amazing doctor and woman I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Not only did she inspire me to become an obstetrician and gynaecologist, but she showed me the type of doctor and person I want to become. I had the pleasure of spending Greek Easter with her, going to many restaurants and on fun excursions, making many new friends along the way. I am eternally grateful for how she treated me, she is a friend for life and I would recommend her as a doctor to anyone in Sydney as she is a one of a kind. I am now excited to be starting my foundation training as a doctor at the Whittington Hospital Trust in London this August, and was lucky to get enough to get an obstetrics & gynaecology rotation in FY2, so cannot wait to continue my training.
