🚭 E-Cigarettes vs Traditional Cigarettes: Why Are We Still Choosing Between Two Harmful Options? The debate often focuses on which is less harmful—traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes. But perhaps we're asking the wrong question. Traditional cigarettes have long been associated with serious health consequences, including oral cancer, periodontal disease, tooth loss, cardiovascular disease, and numerous other complications. E-cigarettes were introduced as a "safer alternative," yet growing evidence links them to dry mouth, gum inflammation, altered oral microbiota, nicotine addiction, and other potential health concerns. Moreover, the long-term effects of e-cigarettes remain uncertain due to limited long-term research. One burns tobacco. The other vaporizes chemicals. One has decades of evidence proving its harm. The other is still accumulating it. Yet both share something important in common: āŒ Neither contributes to better oral health. āŒ Neither promotes overall well-being. āŒ Neither is risk-free. As healthcare professionals, our goal should not be helping people choose between two harmful products—but supporting them in moving toward a future free from nicotine dependence altogether. The real question is: Why are we normalizing either as a healthy choice? What are your thoughts?
