Content gets you seen. Conversations get you chosen. Go back to the foundations of business and one thing is clear. It was always built on referrals and conversations. Long before content was easy to distribute, most work came from someone speaking about you, and then a conversation. That has not changed as much as we pretend. Most of my business still comes through referrals. A warm introduction drops you straight into a personal, high-stakes conversation where trust, risk, and value get examined properly. That is where decisions are made. DMs are just the modern doorway into that same room. I will be honest. DMs are where I struggle. But when a direct message turns into a real dialogue, it can carry the same weight as a referral meeting in person. Content plays a different role for me. It gives visibility and context. It lets people see how I think and remember my name. It does not carry the business on its own. Its job is to make the next conversation start warmer and go deeper. So here is how I see it. Content keeps you visible. Conversations, whether through referrals, meetings, or DMs, are the real engine of growth.
