Most AI projects stall after demo. I ship the ones that don’t.
Presence is a product feature. It does not show up in any proposal. No client ever asks for it in the brief. But they notice when it is gone. A client told me something last month that gave me pause. It wasn't about the work quality, nor about delivery timelines. It was about access. "The reason I trust you is that you listen and take action." That was the compliment. The complaint was its exact inverse. We had gotten busy, delivery was running, but I was not in the room anymore. And when something started feeling existential to them, they could not reach the person who could actually fix it. Here is the pattern I have watched repeat: Senior operator goes heads-down. Processes run. Client hits a problem they consider high-stakes. They escalate. The person who picks up can explain but cannot decide. Client reads this as nobody cares. Trust erodes quietly. Churn starts before anyone notices. The work was fine. The silence after the problem started was not. So I blocked two hours a week on my calendar. Not for delivery oversight. For direct client conversations. Just presence. The difference in client temperature was immediate. Presence at the senior level is a retention mechanism, not a luxury. You do not have to solve everything. You just have to be reachable by the person who thinks their problem is the most important problem in the world.
