🔬 Research Update from The Mayer Lab When we think about CD4+ T cells, we usually think of “helper” cells: immune coordinators that support and shape immune responses rather than directly killing target cells. But the story is more complex. Some CD4+ T cells can display cytotoxic programs, including molecules typically associated with direct cell killing. These cells, known as CD4+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, or CD4+ CTLs, raise fascinating questions about how immune cell identity and function are defined. 🧬 One of our current projects explores a key question: are CD4+ CTLs a single, uniform population, or does this compartment contain multiple cellular identities with different origins and characteristics? Using single-cell data analysis, the team is taking a closer look at the heterogeneity hidden under the “CD4+ CTL” umbrella. By moving beyond simplified definitions, this project aims to better understand how these cells are organized and how they may contribute to human immunity. We’re excited to share more once the full story is published. Stay tuned for more updates from the team 👀🔬 Want to learn more about the Mayer Lab and our research?
