This week, the first-ever Davos Tech Summit was happening in the Swiss alps – bringing together roboticists, researchers, investors, engineers and industry leaders from around the world to discuss the current state and future of robotics. Beyond the conference sessions, visitors could experience robotics firsthand in the Robo City, where robots were demonstrated live and interacted with the public. maxon was proud to support the event and to be on-site with our own booth and team with Robin Camenzind and Marcel Welter. It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas, meet familiar faces, and connect with people shaping the next generation of robotics. One topic stood out across many discussions: Physical AI. There is a growing consensus that it will be one of the next major developments in robotics. At the same time, the conversations highlighted an important reality: while the technology has made tremendous progress, robotics still too often struggles to bridge the gap between impressive technical demonstrations and concepts that can be successfully commercialized. Continued research, collaboration and real-world deployment remain essential. At maxon, we are right in the middle of this development. Our robotic solutions, including our High Efficiency Joints (HEJ), are seeing strong demand across the industry, and the summit gave us the chance to have many valuable conversations with customers, partners and innovators from across the robotics ecosystem. It was also rewarding to see how visible maxon was throughout the event. Robert MacKenzie, Technology and Product Executive at ellipsis, featured our HEJ joints in his presentation. Eloise Matheson, Robotics Engineer at CERN, highlighted the mutually valued partnership between CERN and maxon during her keynote. And Marcel Kaufmann, Robotics Researcher and Data Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, showed images of the Mars rovers Sojourner, Curiosity and Perseverance – all missions that incorporate maxon technology. A star of the Summit was Disneys Frozen snowman Olaf, who appeared of course as a robot, presented by Moritz Bächer from Disney Research Lab in Zurich. maxon also contributed directly to the expert discussions. Our Chief Technology Officer, Thomas Gittler , joined the panel discussion “Building the Physical AI Ecosystem” alongside Emanuela Girardi from Adra - AI-Data-Robotics-Association), Sabine Müller ✨ (Greater Zurich Area). The panel explored what is needed to move Physical AI from promising technology to broad industrial impact. The Tech Summit in Davos created an open and constructive dialogue around the opportunities, challenges and future direction of robotics. We are grateful to have been part of this inaugural event and look forward to continuing these conversations as robotics enters its next chapter.
