My 9-year-old found a viral Steam game without ever touching Steam. Where did he find it? Roblox. Last weekend he asked me if there was a game where you paint yourself to blend into a room and hide. There is. It's called Meccha Chameleon, built by two Japanese developers in about two months, and it has sold more than 15 million copies on Steam since June. He'd never heard of Steam. What he actually found was the wave of Roblox clones that appeared after the Steam version broke out. He landed on one called Chameleon and played about 3.5 hours over the weekend. Another clone, Paint Or Seek, is averaging 4.68 million visits a day with around 43,000 concurrent players. Then it got better. While my wife and I were out, he pulled his 14-year-old sister in to play. He was a painter who could see hidden players. She was a seeker who couldn't. So she watched his screen while he called out every hiding spot. They invented a two-screen co-op cheat the developers never intended, and had a blast doing it. That's the whole flywheel, right in my kitchen. Culture is born on Steam, remixed into Roblox by developers, then remixed again by the players themselves. This is why Roblox matters. It's where the culture actually reaches Gen Alpha, at a scale and depth you can't find anywhere else. The hard part, for the platform and the brands trying to show up on it, is keeping pace with how fast developers and players move. I broke down the full trend, clone data included, in my latest piece, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/gAudk7Kr It's also the kind of ecosystem pattern I now track for founding members of my new Roblox market intelligence platform.
