๐Ÿ“ฃ Big News: A decade-long game of hide-and-seek in space is over! ๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿช We are thrilled to announce the discovery of Beta Pictoris d, the third giant planet found orbiting the famous star Beta Pictoris! This wasnโ€™t just a simple observationโ€”it was a serendipitous "found you!" moment. While investigating the variability of the well-known planet Beta Pic b, an international team of astronomers spotted a faint signal that had been hiding in plain sight within archival data for over 11 years. โ“Why is Beta Pictoris d a game-changer? Incredible Sensitivity: It is 100 times fainter than its neighbour, Beta Pic b, and ranks among the lightest exoplanets (just 2.4x Jupiter's mass) ever directly imaged from the ground. The Missing Link: Its position and mass perfectly explain the mysterious warp in the system's surrounding debris disk. A Cosmic Laboratory: Beta Pictoris is now only the second system ever where more than two planets have been directly imaged, allowing us to compare siblings born in the exact same environment. This achievement was made possible by the new ERIS instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) and is complemented by independent discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Huge congratulations to the global team of over 90 researchers! Special recognition to the lead authors and key contributors: ๐Ÿ‘ฅ The Discovery Team: Ben Sutlieff (The University of Edinburgh) โ€“ Co-lead author Markus Bonse (European Southern Observatory / Max-Planck-Institut fรผr Intelligente Systeme) โ€“ Co-lead author Elisabeth Matthews (MPIA) โ€“ Expert on atmospheric interpretation Iain Hammond (MPIA) โ€“ Expert on archival data analysis Aidan Gibbs (UC San Diego) โ€“ Lead of the independent JWST discovery team This discovery is a testament to the power of Open Data and the exciting future awaiting us with the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and CGI on board the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. ๐Ÿ”ญโœจ ๐Ÿ”— Read the full Story here: https://lnkd.in/eQ2ZDUhe #Astronomy #Exoplanets #BetaPictoris #SpaceDiscovery #DirectImaging #VLT #JWST #MPIA #ESO #Astrophysics
