Following the preventable death of Eve Brown, a NSW Coroner has found that serious failures in care occurred at a rural health service, including a failure to escalate her treatment and refer her for timely imaging or further investigation. A coronial inquest later found that she should have been transferred earlier and that she likely would have survived. Maurice Blackburn acted for Eve’s family in medical negligence proceedings and during the coronial inquest, supporting them through a complex and deeply distressing process. “Patients living in rural or remote areas must be able to access properly resourced hospitals, timely diagnostics and urgent retrieval when they need it,” said medical negligence associate Naomi Spigelman. Eve Brown was a respected local artist, and mother of three. Her story underscores that timely access to appropriate healthcare is not optional — it’s essential.
