For decades, “kilometre 58” on the road from Bogotá to Villavicencio was known as a weak point. Landslides, unstable slopes, earthquakes — again and again, this critical connection had to close. What nature made unpredictable, infrastructure struggled to withstand. Today, that story has changed. With the new K58 viaduct spanning 720 metres across the Río Negro valley, a resilient solution has taken its place. Instead of resisting seismic forces with rigid structures, the bridge is designed to adapt. At the heart of this approach: MAURER’s SIP®-DR sliding isolation pendulums. They don’t fight earthquakes — they manage them: → isolating the structure → dissipating seismic energy → allowing controlled movement → and bringing the bridge safely back to position The impact is significant: seismic forces on the structure are reduced by around 44%, while the design itself becomes more efficient and buildable under extreme conditions.
