As a child, I once watched a family 'uncle' pick up a screwdriver by the metal blade and use the handle as a hammer. Did it drive the nail in? Sort of. Was anyone else surprised? No. "That's just the way he is." Was it a disaster for the tool and the wall? Absolutely. I see the exact same thing happening in enterprise tech today. Too many organisations believe that because they sync data to an ODS or a Data Warehouse, they have a viable recovery plan. They don't. In my latest article, I walk through exactly why an ODS, a Data Warehouse, and even Salesforce's own Data Export would all fail the moment you actually need them, and what a real recovery looks like, so you don't have to find out the hard way. The post-mortem of a 100-user recovery event might make uncomfortable reading. How long would it be before you even realised your data was gone?
