14-Days in Packaging: LEGO’s New Campus, Plastics Lawsuits, & much more The last two weeks across Packaging Europe has seen heavy industrial investments, major legal friction in the US, and structural breakthroughs in flexible barrier tech. the LEGO Group Opens Dedicated Innovation Centre The LEGO Group officially opened its Kornmarken Campus in Denmark. This 100,000 m² state-of-the-art global manufacturing hub is dedicated to test-scaling new production processes across moulds, moulding, and sustainable packaging. It is a major physical step to accelerate the toy giant’s shift away from fossil fuel-based plastics. Legal Backlash Against California’s Plastics Act Friction is boiling over in the US as seventeen state attorneys general, filed a lawsuit to block California’s Plastics Act. The legal challenge, supported by the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), argues the state's aggressive mandates force "radical" packaging redesigns across the country, artificially raising prices and overreaching regulatory powers. Monolayer Breakthroughs in Flexible Packaging The race to simplify multi-material plastics into recyclable single layers has taken a major leap. Siegwerk launched its CIRKIT OXYBAR WHITE platform, which merges white ink and an oxygen barrier into one single layer to replace complex EVOH or foil structures. Concurrently, Dow released a major directive pushing for a collaborative design mindset between material science and converters to scale up flexible recyclability. Plus: Ergonomic Paperization: Sabert Corporation rolled out a new line of fully recyclable, home-compostable paper cutlery engineered to match the structural strength of traditional plastic silverware. Longer Shelf Life: Elopak successfully commercialized a new hygienic filling process designed to extend the shelf-life performance of its mini Pure-Pak® cartons. Barrier Tech Upgrades: Plastipak advanced its rigid portfolio via its proprietary O2Blox™ barrier technology, while Paramelt launched a new coating platform to boost the moisture performance of fiber-based containers. Post-PPWR Compliance: UPM launched its "compliant by design" packaging portfolio, built to give brands a future-proofed material pipeline ahead of incoming European mandates. Reports highlight a growing corporate shift, showing that major FMCG brands are no longer isolating sustainability in R&D, but are fully integrating it into core procurement and logistical operations. With LEGO building its own dedicated packaging innovation hub, do you think more FMCG giants will pull packaging R&D entirely in-house, or will they continue to rely on external converters to solve the sustainability puzzle? The Sustainable Packaging Summit agenda is looking more crucial by the day! https://lnkd.in/e_AFZHTm #PackagingEurope #SustainablePackaging #LEGO #Innovation #CircularEconomy #PlasticsRegulation #MaterialScience
