New research from Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd highlights something we’ve long believed: there are positive benefits to doll play. A six-week study of children aged 4–8 found that those who played with dolls, specifically Barbie, showed greater improvement in understanding others’ thoughts and feelings compared to children playing games on a tablet. Through imaginative play, children have the opportunity to explore perspectives, practise empathy, and make sense of the world around them. The latest peer-reviewed findings, which were announced today, form part of a multi-year research programme led by Cardiff University in collaboration with Barbie, exploring the developmental benefits of doll play.
