Researcher | PhD | lecturer | journalist | editor | creative contrarian | media expert | I enjoy working with stakeholders on (social) media platform governance, public digital infra and digital autonomy in the EU.
There is science fiction, and there is science about designing our (online) future. In the latter category we just published an academic article about what public service social media (PSSM) could look like. 💭A few years ago this was just dreaming, now slowly becoming an urgent infrastructural need in Europe. Hopefully we can join forces to ensure that an alternative social network creates public value for all citizens (rather than financial profits for a few). 💡Read how the PSSM value proposition could solve user problems via human moderation, decentralized data storage and a lack of personalised profiling inside a new type of walled garden with a privacy friendly secure e-wallet. 🙏Very grateful for the wonderful collaboration with my two fabulous co-authors Erna Ruijer (Ph.D) and José van Dijck and very valuable co-creation with iHub Radboud University, Waag Futurelab and PublicSpaces and its members, such as patient federations(kanker.nl & MIND), and public broadcasters (VPRO & VPRO Tegenlicht) and libraries (de Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant & KB nationale bibliotheek), SURF and @SIDN fonds.
