IBM Research’s #openscience toolkit for simulating carbon dioxide geologic storage in #digitalrock is now fully available. We are excited to complete the release of FlowDiscovery, a computational toolkit first introduced by IBM’s Brazil Research Lab 5 years ago. In a paper published today in the journal Transport in Porous Media, we use FlowDiscovery for investigating brine injection and calcium carbonate precipitation in sandstone at reservoir conditions. The simulations track carbon mineralization across the microscopic network, within each capillary of the digital rock’s connected pore space. The process gradually reduces the diameter of capillaries and causes the porosity and permeability of the rock to degrade. Depending on flow conditions, the rock might not “live up” to its full geologic storage potential. You can now use FlowDiscovery for simulating carbon dioxide injection and mineralization at pore scale, and for exploring reservoir-specific, geologic storage conditions.
