In this C&EN interview with Sara Cottle, green chemistry pioneer Dr. John Warner reflects on the the complexity of embracing greener chemistry in industry and academia, and the importance of communicating science to the public. His opening argument: hydrocarbons aren't the best building blocks. They're just the ones we funded for a century. Had we poured those resources into cellulose or lignin, we'd be building the world's materials from those instead. This reframing is at the heart of why Materiom exists: nature offers an abundance of richer, safer feedstocks. With the right data and tools we can accelerate the discovery of materials made from them.
