How do you determine structural loads for a complex vessel design when direct measurements aren’t always possible? By combining measured accelerations with numerical modelling, MARIN successfully inferred bending moments and shear forces for a challenging symmetrical double‑ended ferry. The results showed that whipping effects can significantly amplify structural loads — increasing vertical bending moments by up to 70% and shear forces by 80%. Through a combination of model testing and finite element analysis, we derived updated whipping factors and created a more reliable basis for long‑term load predictions across various wave conditions, headings and speeds. This integrated approach provided a clearer understanding of the vessel’s global flexural vibration modes and the corresponding design loads. Curious how advanced structural analysis can strengthen your vessel’s design process?
