Ever wondered how a ferry’s bow pod handles 6 m waves in the English Channel? MARIN’s recent model tests on the new double‑ended P&O ferry provide valuable answers. The results show that in head and bow‑quartering seas, the loads on the instrumented bow pod can rise to 30 times those measured in calm water, while in beam seas they still reach around four times the calm‑water levels. With significant wave heights of up to 6 metres in this region, such extremes underline the limits of numerical prediction tools and the continued importance of physical model testing for innovative designs. That is why we performeded seakeeping model tests with a complex, four-segment model, equipped with a flexible backbone and four pods. How are you integrating physical testing into your design process?
